How the odds formats work

American odds are what US sportsbooks show. A plus number is what you win on $100 (+150 wins $150). A minus number is what you risk to win $100 (-150 risks $150).

Decimal odds are your total return per $1, stake included. 2.50 returns $2.50 on $1. To convert, plus odds: 1 + odds ÷ 100. Minus odds: 1 + 100 ÷ |odds|.

Fractional odds are profit over stake. 3/2 wins $3 for every $2.

Implied probability is 1 ÷ decimal odds. -110 is 1.909, so the book is pricing it at 52.4%.

What vig means

Add up the implied probability of both sides and you'll get more than 100%. The extra is the vig, the book's cut. At -110 on both sides it's 104.8%, a hold of about 4.5%. Strip it out and you get the fair odds: what the line would be with no edge for the book. To beat the bookie over time, you need to win more often than the fair odds say.

FAQ

What do -110 odds mean?

You risk $110 to win $100. The implied probability is 52.4%, so you need to win about 52.4% of -110 bets just to break even.

How do I convert American odds to decimal?

For plus odds, divide by 100 and add 1 (+150 is 2.50). For minus odds, divide 100 by the odds without the minus sign and add 1 (-150 is 1.667).

What is implied probability?

It's the chance of winning that the odds suggest: 1 divided by the decimal odds. It includes the book's vig, so the true chance is a little lower.

What is the vig or juice?

The vig is the sportsbook's built-in edge. On a two-way market, add both sides' implied probabilities. Anything over 100% is the book's margin.
